A 45-year-old female driver was reportedly ‘blinded by the lights of another vehicle when she crashed into a pedal cyclist and killed him along the Profit Public Road, West Coast Berbice early Friday.

Dead is 24-year-old Nevill Anthony Small; the accident occurred at around 05:10hrs.

The driver has been identified as Sandra Gittens of Friendship, East Coast Demerara. Police said she was proceeding east along the northern side of the road in motorcar PTT 9673. Gittens reportedly told the police that the “bright lights” from a vehicle in the opposite direction ‘blinded’ her and so she swerved and collided with Small.

“As a result of the impact the pedal cyclist was thrown onto the front windscreen then onto the roadway where he received injuries to his head and about his body,” police said.

Small was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to Fort Wellington Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver is in custody assisting with the investigation.
