Former GCB president Fizul Bacchus passes on

The local cricket fraternity was thrown into mourning on Monday (November 15th, 2021) with news of the passing of former president of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Fizul Bacchus.

Sources confirmed to News Room that Bacchus, 63, passed away after a period of illness. It is understood Bacchus fell ill after the passing of his wife earlier this year.

President of the GCB, Bissoondyal Singh, said: “I would like to express sincere condolences to his immediate family, and by extension the cricket fraternity.”

Former Secretary of the GCB and ex-Cricket West Indies Director, Anand Sanasie, who served under Bacchus for several years at the GCB, described him as “a quiet gentleman, but strong in his opinion.”

“He was a very good leader. In a subtle and quiet way, he would get things done. It was a pleasure serving at the Cricket Board with him.”

Bacchus was president of the GCB until March this year when fresh elections were held and Singh was voted in as president.

Bacchus was also a long-serving Vice-president of the GCB. The Essequibian was also a GCB representative on Cricket West Indies.
