Nineteen-year-old Alex Ferreira was killed after he collided with a hire car at Tabatinga Bridge, Central Rupununi, Region Nine.

The accident occurred at about 23:00hrs on Sunday, Police Headquarters reported. The car HC 2059 was being driven by 59-year-old Walter Martin of Tabatinga.

He has since been arrested. Police reported that Martin claims that the teen of Culvert City, Central Rupununi, was observed speeding along the road in a reckless manner, moments before he collided with the car.

Martin said he applied brakes, but the teen lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into the right front side of the car.

Police said the teen was thrown off the motorcycle and fell on the road.

He was picked up in an unconscious state by public-spirited citizens and taken to Lethem Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A breathalyzer test conducted on Martin detected no alcohol.
