The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has an ambitious plan to have athletes from all the territories in South America compete in a 10k race in 2022.
The elaborate endeavour, which will be the first of its kind for Guyana, is being planned for the 20th staging of the event next year.
Hutson made this disclosure on Sunday after the relative unknown Marlon Nicholson stunned the field to win the male title in the all-Guyanese event.
“Come next year, there will be two athletes of each gender from every South American country coming here and Guyana must represent. If we can put Nicholson in camp early, it would be good for the event,” the AAG head revealed.
On Tuesday, Hutson indicated to News Room Sport that the plan being contemplated is to have separate 10k events for males and females.
The budget for the event is approximately G$30 million as the AAG will be catering for accommodation and airfare, and the intention is to host in November 2022.
Additionally, the AAG head indicated that Sunday’s race was a test of their logistical strength with the big aim of producing a well-organised event in 2022.
In the past, the 10k was contested across legs in Suriname, French Guiana and Guyana in that order, and athletes from outside of South America had participated.
