Two brothers, ages 37 and 38, are in police custody along with a 25-year-old female relative after they reportedly attempted to bribe a police officer with $700,000 in cash.

Police Headquarters reported that the 37-year-old man was arrested on Saturday at about 17:30hrs and taken to the Golden Grove Police Station on the East Bank of Demerara because he was wanted in connection with two-sentence warrants for fraud.

While in custody, he requested a telephone call to his lawyer which was facilitated by the police. The lawyer later visited the lock-ups and shortly after, the female relative visited and gave the detained man a package.

The detained man then requested to speak with the investigating officer and then proceeded to hand him the cash in the presence of another policeman to forego the investigation.

“The investigating officer immediately told the male of the offence committed and cautioned him,” police reported.

The cash was marked and lodged pending charges.
The female relative and the man’s brother were also contacted by police and arrested.
