A search is ongoing for 21-year-old construction worker, Shaheed Alli of ‘B’ Field Sophia, Georgetown who is suspected to have drowned while swimming on Monday.
The incident occurred at Hope Canal, East Coast Demerara at about 15:00hrs.
Police Headquarters reported that Alli’s brother-in-law, who is also a construction worker, along with an 18-year-old man and the victim, were drinking ‘Vasco wine and Turbo energy drink’ at about 14:45hrs.
Fifteen minutes later, the brother-in-law said they decided to go swimming in the canal.
He claimed that he saw when Alli jumped in the water and went down. When he did not surface after a few minutes, they began searching for him but did not find him.
The brother-in-law and teen are in police custody pending an investigation.
