Elderly woman dies in hit and run on Lamaha Street


Police are on the hunt for the driver of a white vehicle who fled the scene after hitting down and killing a 78-year-old woman on Lamaha Street, Georgetown on Monday morning.

Police Headquarters reported that Veronica Lewis of Grove, East Bank Demerara, was standing on the southern side of the street in the vicinity of Waterloo Street when she was struck down by the driver who failed to stop.

The accident occurred at around 04:50hrs; police said the elderly woman was left lying on the road with severe head injuries.

The Ambulance Service was contacted and arrived shortly at the scene when an EMT pronounced Lewis dead. The woman’s body is at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Parlour awaiting an autopsy.
