Several arrested after police find stolen items, guns

Several men and one boy were arrested after police found several stolen items and guns in a house located at High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue in New Amsterdam, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne).

According to information provided to the News Room, police officers made these arrests following the robbery of Jovon Dos Santos, a 28-year-old seaman of Alexander Street, New Amsterdam.

Dos Santos was robbed on Saturday at about 04:30hrs at Main and Alexander Streets by two identifiable men riding bicycles; they were reportedly armed with handguns.

The men relieved the victim of $16,000; a Samsung cell phone valued at $58,000; his national identification (ID) card and two commercial bank cards.

The News Room understands that based on information received, police officers conducted a cordon and search exercise in High Dam, Angoy’s Avenue Area at the home of a man identified as Paul Young.

During the search, a pink and brown haversack containing a transparent plastic bag with a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found in Young’s bedroom.

Kevin Moriah, an 18-year-old man who was in the room, reportedly told police that the suspected cannabis was his. Thereafter, a further search of the room led to the discovery of two air pistols.

Young, Moriah and a 16-year-old boy were arrested. Several other occupants of the house were also arrested. Those also arrested are: Sean Benjamin, 19; Keion Clarke, 19; Quincy Lewis, 23; and, Comptom Semple, 35.

When questioned, Benjamin and Clarke reportedly admitted to committing three armed robberies on Saturday.

Police officers used the stolen cellphones to contact the owners who verified that the phones were indeed stolen.

The suspects are all in custody, assisting with investigations.
