Montrose man drowns while showing children how to swim
A 33-year-old man of Montrose Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara (ECD) reportedly drowned on Wednesday at Felicity backdam. Dead is Solomon Sookram.
Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred between 14:00hrs and 16:00hrs.
According to reports, Sookram usually cuts grass for his father’s cattle at Felicity, and would often consume alcohol before cutting the grass.
At about 14:30hrs on Wednesday, Sookram went to Felicity, took off his clothing and swam across the canal to cut grass.
“He began showing the children in the yard how to swim and he plunged and went under and did not resurface for about five minutes,” the police reported.
A neighbour raised an alarm and Sookram’s family launched a search for him.
Police said after his body was found, they tried desperately to resuscitate him.
The cops were summoned to the scene and Sookram was pronounced dead by Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT). Police said no marks of violence were observed on the body.
