Come January 2022, residents of Region One (Barima-Waini) are set to benefit from more health care services with the conversion of the Mabaruma Hospital into a more modern facility with new upgrades.

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony on Monday shared via a Facebook post that the upgrades are being funded by the United Kingdom (UK).

Thus far, works have been done to refurbish the Operating Theatre, the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), the Recovery Room, and the Maternity Wards at the facility.

The Health Minister said too that works being done on the Emergency Department “will be completed shortly” to have the facility “fully operational” by January 2022.

These upgrades are being done through the US$4.2 million SMART hospital project, which will see hospitals across Guyana being converted into climate resilient facilities that use more solar energy and stored water.

Already, the Diamond Diagnostic Centre and the Lethem Hospital have been upgraded as SMART hospitals. Works are also being done at the Leonora Hospital and the Paramakatoi facility in Region Eight.
