Pedal cyclist crushed by lorry

A 64-year-old pedal cyclist died on Thursday after he was crushed by a motor lorry on the Grove Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Dead is Budhram Sookoo, a resident of Herstelling, EBD. Police Headquarters identified the driver of the lorry (GYY 5319) as 32-year-old Abdool Bacchus; he has since been arrested.

Police said the victim was riding in front of the lorry heading south on the public road at around 11:50hrs when the lorry collided with him.

Bacchus fell off the bicycle and the left side rear wheel ran him over.  He was picked up in an unconscious condition by an ambulance and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead.

His body is presently at Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting post mortem examination.

A notice of intended prosecution was served on the lorry driver who tested negative for alcohol in his sytem. He remains in police custody.
