Western Tigers, GDF to clash for GFF/K&S year-end supremacy

As many predicted, even before the first match of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF)/Kashif and Shanghai Organisation year-end tournament, the formidable Western Tigers FC and defending champions Guyana Defence Force FC would reach the final.

This became a reality after contrasting semi-final victories on Wednesday evening.

The National Track Field Facility, Leonora, became a battleground for four sides, all out to accomplish one objective- secure a spot in the January 1 final.

Tigers had the tougher draw, as they came up against Guyana Police FC, coached by Wayne Dover, while Charles Pollard was at the helm of Tigers.

Compliments of Jermine ‘Panky’ Junior, the lawmen struck first – in the 65th minute – after a goalless first half.

The West Ruimveldt unit bided their time and pounced when the opportunity arose with a stupendous freekick by William Europe in the 85th and then the winning goal by Trayon Bobb in the 87th.

In the second contest, the defending champs were pushed, but prevailed 3-1 on penalty kicks against Den Amstel.

It brought the end of a fairy-tale run by the West Demerara outfit, who have, without question, served notice that they are a team to mark in future tournaments.

Gideon Payne was the ‘pain’ for the soldiers with a brace. He netted in the 51st and 59th minutes, which pushed Den Amstel ahead after Chris Macey opened the scoring for GDF in the 45th.

The engrossing tussle continued and it seemed as if Den Amstel would slay another giant until Ian Dooker rescued GDF with the equaliser in the 87th.

It is now just one more night, one more game, to determine who takes home the winner’s purse of G$2 million and the prized trophy on January 1 at the Leonora.

Those wishing to attend the finale must be fully vaccinated.
