A total of 206 persons have been infected with the novel coronavirus and have since tested positive for COVID-19 according to information provided by the Ministry of Health.

The new infections were recorded after 1,278 tests were done. This has increased the total number of infections recorded in Guyana since March 2020 to 39,779.

And these new cases were recorded in: Region Two (eight cases), Region Three (25 cases), Region Four (123 cases), Region Five (one case), Region Six (27 cases), Region Nine (nine cases) and Region 10 (13 cases).

No deaths have been recorded in the new year as yet, so the death toll remains as 1,054.

There are also six patients receiving care in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 39 people in institutional isolation, 1,040 people in home isolation and four in institutional quarantine.

Meanwhile, a total of 37,640 people have recovered after they were infected with COVID-19.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony in his daily COVID-19 update on Friday revealed that cases have moved from double digits to triple digits in a matter of days and this can be attributed to the many social activities being held over the holidays and people not adhering to health guidelines.
