A 75-year-old man on Wednesday morning died in a fire that completely destroyed his house at lot 21-34 Pilot Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Dead is Oscer Liddle. The News Room understands that the fire service responded to a call sometime around 06:30hrs and upon arrival, stringent efforts were made to tame the blaze.
After firefighters managed to get the fire under control, closer inspection and investigations revealed the burnt remains of the pensioner on a bed inside a bedroom of the wooden building.
The News Room understands that Liddle lived alone. Preliminary investigations reveal that the gas stove was left on and that the fire started in the kitchen.
