St. Vincent and the Grenadines currently has hosting rights for this year’s Junior Caribbean Area Squash Association (CASA) Championships.
However, if the island opts not to host the event, the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) is firmly ready to stand in as an alternate host. In 2021 when Barbados was listed as host and opted not to, Guyana was interested, but it was a late call in December.
If by March St. Vincent decides against hosting, Guyana is keen to host the championship, potentially set to be held in June or July.
According to the Chairman of the Competitions Committee, Deja Dias, CASA is aware of Guyana’s intentions to host, and the decision would be in their hands should St. Vincent opt-out.
Guyana had hosted Junior CASA in 2017, where they relinquished their 12-year stranglehold on the title, and since, has come up second to Barbados.
In 2019, GSA hosted the Senior Caribbean Championships, but since that year there has been no Caribbean event owing to the pandemic.
Locally, there was a League which started in September 2021, and Dias feels it has helped some of the younger players up their skill levels, which could swing the title back to Guyana, should Junior CASA be staged.
At the last Junior CASA in 2019, out of the 10 individual goals, Guyana won four, compliments of Abosaide Cadogan and Shomari Wiltshire (U-17 titles), while Kirsten Gomes and Michael Alphonso won Under-15 titles.
