A 21-year-old Venezuelan national was on Friday remanded to prison for murder after he was charged for fatally bludgeoning another Venezuelan man to death with a piece of wood during a misunderstanding over raw gold.

Elith Osorio Dominguez appeared virtually before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and was not required to plead to the capital offence.

Police claimed that Dominguez, on January 1, 2022, at Arau Mountain Top, Cuyuni River, killed Animal Sonja, 51, also a Venezuelan national.

He was remanded to prison until March 14, 2022 and the matter was transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court for hearing.

According to reports, both parties were known to each other and on the day in question, the men were at Dominguez sister’s camp located at Arau Mountain Top.

It was alleged that an argument ensued over Dominguez allegedly owing Sonja some raw gold.

The argument became heated and Dominguez allegedly picked up a piece of wood and struck the victim to his head, causing him to fall to the ground; he died on the spot.

Dominguez escaped from the scene and was later arrested by police.
