Guyana on Saturday set a new record after confirming a total of 1,016 new COVID-19 cases in 24-hours.

In addition to the new cases, another person died from the dreaded virus, taking the overall death toll since March 2020 to 1,067. The latest fatality is a 46-year-old unvaccinated man from Region 10 who succumbed on January 07.

This means that a total of 13 persons have died for this month thus far.

Meanwhile, the new infections take Guyana’s overall confirmed cases to 44,245 of which 5, 152 people are isolated at home after testing positive.

    The new cases were recorded in each administrative region: Region 1 (3 cases); Region 2 (43); Region 3 (205); Region 4 (566); Region 5 (43); Region 6 (45); Region 7 (47); Region 8 (1); Region 9 (32) and Region 10 (31).

There are currently four persons in the Intensive Care Unit; 96 are hospitalised across the country and 16 persons are in institutional isolation.

To date, 37,930 persons have recovered from the disease. Guyana has been racking up COVID-19 infections on a daily basis and it is suspected to be the Omicron variant although the local health authorities are yet to officially confirm its presence here.
