Cyclist dies in Parika accident, charges coming for truck driver

A 45-year-old cyclist who was struck down on Thursday last by a truck at Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE) succumbed to his injuries at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Saturday morning.

Dead is Collin Mendonca of Hydronie Village, EBE. Police Headquarters reported that Mendonca rode into the path of the motor lorry (#GZZ 2284) which was being driven at a fast rate by Abdullah Mohamed, 27, of Rockers Street Tuschen New Housing Scheme, EBD at around 12:20hrs.

Police reported that the truck driver was proceeding north on the western carriageway of Parika when the cyclist – who was on the eastern carriageway – rode into its path.

He was picked up by public-spirited persons in an unconscious state and escorted to the Leonora Cottage Hospital and later referred to Georgetown Public Hospital where he died at about 08:50hrs two days later.

The truck driver tested negative for alcohol in his system and he is expected to be charged shortly.
