The house of a vendor and wife was burnt to the ground following a fire that reportedly started in the upper flat of the two-storey-wooden and concrete structure at Maida Farm, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to Asif Mohamed, 47, a vendor at the New Amsterdam market, he left his home just around 08:00hrs on Sunday to take his aunt to the Eureka Medical Centre and upon his arrival there, he received a call at around 08:45hrs from his wife that the house was on fire.
By the time he returned home, the entire house was engulfed in flames. Mohamed disclosed that before he left, his wife and others were cooking in the kitchen located in the bottom flat of the house.
However, based on information provided to him, smoke first emanated from the upper flat where the fuse box is located. While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, Mohamed disclosed that he has incurred millions of dollars in losses.
“How I get money I keep adding on and making. I have lived here all my life, my grandparents land this but the house sold out and I built my house here,” a distraught Mohamed said.
An investigation to determine the cause of fire is ingoing by the fire service in Berbice.
