A four-month-old baby, who was rushed to the Skeldon hospital in Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne) on Friday, has died but Regional Health Officer (RHO) Dr. Vishalya Sharma has denied reports that the baby died because she was administered vaccines by doctors.

The baby girl lived in Grant Crabwood Creek, East Berbice Corentyne. And according to reports, she was taken to the hospital at around 11:00 hrs on Friday by her mother. The child, reportedly, received care from a private practitioner before.

In a press release, the RHO noted that the baby girl was assessed by a doctor on duty, given initial treatment and then placed under observation. Further, it was noted that the family left without any further evaluation of the child.

“The child at no point in time was discharged from our care or given any vaccines,” Dr. Sharma said in the release.

Later, at around 13:00 hrs, the mother reportedly returned with the child. Then, it was noted that the child was in a worsened condition.

As a result, Dr. Sharma said that the team on duty attempted to resuscitate the baby girl but to no avail. As such, the toddler succumbed.

The body of the child is at the hospital’s mortuary and an autopsy will be performed on Monday.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sharma said that the Regional Health Services and the hospital are available to answer any questions the family may have.
