The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is streamlining plans to start the Junior National Championship on Saturday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

The GTTA and the fixtures committee are still in discussions as it relates to schedule of events, but based on the preliminary itinerary the plan is to have action from 09:00h to 19:00h on Saturday.

Action will continue on Sunday then the following Saturday, to allow a limited capacity in the Sports Hall in keeping with the COVID-19 protocols.

According to GTTA President Godfrey Munroe, the tournament will have Doubles, along with Singles in the Under-15 and Under-19 divisions for both boys and girls.

After the Junior Championship finishes on January 29, the plan is to start the Seniors the following day.

The significant aspect of this championship is it being the baseline for selection to national teams in 2022 from the standpoint that apart from the winners, those who finish below could be chosen for developmental tours or programmes organised by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

It means now, the GTTA, based on the results of the Nationals, can decide which player falls into those categories and bring a more structured system for team selection.
