Cyclist, 71, crushed to death by lumber truck

A 71-year-old man of Victoria Avenue, Eccles, East Bank Demerara was crushed to death on Wednesday by a container truck transporting lumber.

Dead is Carlon Windsor Barrett, a pensioner. Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred at about 14:30hrs on Water Street in the vicinity of Muneshwar’s Limited in Georgetown.

A notice of intended prosecution was served on the driver of the truck, Jormen Joseph, 33, of Sophia, Georgetown.

Joseph alleged that he was proceeding south on Water Street and as he approached Muneshwar’s, he put on his right-side indicator and turned west.

Joseph said while turning, he felt the right-side rear wheel of the trailer run over something which caused him to stop. Upon investigation, he discovered that he had run over Barrett. Barrett was on an electric cycle and died at the scene.

Police said no traces of alcohol were found after Joseph did a breathalyser test.
