A 53-year-old vendor, who was allegedly caught on CCTV cameras stealing over US$3,000 from a woman’s purse was, on Friday, remanded to prison for the offence of simple larceny.

Denise Hilliman called ‘Joy’, of Lamaha Park, Georgetown, appeared before City Magistrate Leron Daly and denied that on January 17, 2022, at Robb Street Georgetown, she stole US $3,070, along with GY $70,000 from Maylin Ortiz Rodriguez.

According to reports, on the day in question, the victim was shopping at a store located on Robb Street when she misplaced her purse. After realising her purse was missing, the victim made checks around the store but did not find it. She reported the matter to the police and an investigation was launched.

The police managed to review footage from CCTV cameras inside the store and observed Hilliman removing the purse. Hilliman was later arrested and when searched, she had $65,700 in her shoulder bag.

Under caution, Hilliman told investigators that she was around the Robb Street area, but denied stealing the woman’s purse.

Although the court prosecutor made no objection to bail, Magistrate Daly remanded Hilliman to prison until March 25, 2022.

Last July, Hilliman was charged for attempted murder after she allegedly stabbed a woman to her chest with a pitchfork.  She was on bail for that offence.
