An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of a fire at the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast power plant.

Public Relations Officer Nathalie Pindar told the News Room that one of the caterpillar generators set caught fire early on Wednesday but that fire has since been extinguished.

Pindar explained that the now damaged generator set was a backup and is not among the new units installed in 2019.

“We took down the entire plant just as a precautionary measure just to ensure that everything is okay,” Pindar explained.

The News Room understands that power has since been restored on the Essequibo Coast.

The 5.4-MegaWatt (MW) Anna Regina Power plant was commissioned in April 2019. It is the first in the county to utilise heavy fuel oil which is more economical for operations.
