Over 100 COVID deaths in 27 days; 408 new cases recorded

Two unvaccinated men died from COVID-19, taking Guyana’s overall death toll to 1, 156 since March 2020.

The Ministry of Health reported that both men, aged 81 and 66, are from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica).

The 81-year-old died on January 26 and the 66-year-old died on January 27. The latest deaths take the death toll for January to 101, making it the third month with the highest death toll since the pandemic hit here two years ago.

The month with the highest death toll is September 2021 with 173 fatalities followed by October 2021 with 129.

Meanwhile, 408 new COVID infections were recorded from 2, 416 tests, taking the overall number of confirmed cases to 58, 604.

The news cases were recorded in the following regions; Region One (three cases), Region Two (20 cases), Region Three (40 cases), Region Four (195 cases), Region Six (23 cases), Region Seven (29 cases) and Region Ten (98 cases).

To date, 45, 440 people have recovered from the virus.

There are 17 patients in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit, 173 are in institutional isolation and 11, 818 are in home isolation.
