Teen drowns after canoe capsizes in Mazaruni River

The body of a 19-year-old gold miner was recovered from the Mazaruni River after the canoe he was in sank on Tuesday afternoon.

Dead is Renaldo Rampersaud. Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred at about 16:00hrs at ‘Luw Luw’ Island Point and Banana Landing, Middle Mazaruni River.

According to reports, Rampersaud and another man left the Cashew Creek Backdam in the canoe to purchase some items at Banana Landing. Police said the men are employees with a female dredge owner identified as Nesha Joseph.

“Whilst paddling the canoe on their way back and in the vicinity of Luw Luw Island Point, the canoe began taking in water and sank and the other male managed to swim to shore but Renaldo went under and never resurfaced,” the police stated.

Rampersaud’s brother, Joshua Williams managed to recover his body at about 16:50hrs.

At the time this report was released, police said the body was awaiting transportation to Bartica and later to Georgetown for an autopsy.
