Swimming turns deadly: Carpenter dies after backflip into canal

A 28-year-old man of Britannia Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB) died after he reportedly backflipped into a canal at Tempe Village, WCB. Dead is Ramesh Ramphal, a carpenter.

Police Headquarters reported that the incident occurred at about 17:00hrs on Monday.

According to the report, Ramphal and his girlfriend, Rushelle Craig, 23, were swimming in the canal.

She told detectives that they were on the western side of the canal when Ramphal walked over to the eastern side, back-flipped and never surfaced.

The girlfriend said after he did not turn up for about 10 minutes, she went to his home located about a mile away and informed his relatives.

Ramphal’s body was found about an hour later; he was stuck in the mud in the canal.

The young man was pronounced dead at the Fort Wellington Public Hospital.

The body is presently at Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting an autopsy.
