$130 million for upgrades to Cliff Anderson Sports Hall

In the consideration of the estimates for this year’s budget it was revealed that of the $450 million budgeted to the National Sports Commission (NSC), approximately $130 million will be spent on upgrades to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony, who acted in the capacity of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr., due to subject Minister being unwell, revealed $80 million will be spent on the installation of bucket seats.

Currently, the Sports Hall, Guyana’s premier indoor sport facility, has wooden benches built on steel structures as seats.

Additionally, $30 million will be for an Air Conditioning system and $20 million to refurbish the floor.

At the National Gymnasium on Mandela Avenue, $2.8 million will be spent on the rehabilitation of the driveway, and a basketball court to the tune of $1.6 million will be constructed.

In April 2021, Minister Ramson Jr. indicated that plans to transform the National Gymnasium into a quality multi-purpose facility are progressing well.

The Minister added that other disciplines such as Futsal, Volleyball and Tennis would benefit from the refurbished facility, and the area to the south is also under consideration for development to cater for other sport.

Out of this year’s $552.9 billion budget, sport has been allocated $3.15 billion with a capital of $2.4 billion.
