(Qatar Tribune) – Diplomats and officials of the Embassy of Cooperative Republic of Guyana held a fitness walkathon at Aspire Park to mark the National Sport Day (NSD) on Tuesday.

Led by Guyanese Ambassador to Qatar HE Safraaz Ahmad Shadood, the group walked around the park.

On this year’s theme ‘Sport is Life,’ the ambassador said it’s very relevant today in Qatar as the country is fast becoming a global sporting giant. This year’s theme, he said, stresses the significance of a dedicated day to sports, especially on the 10th anniversary of the annual celebration.

“The Embassy of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana would like to extend best wishes to the Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and the people of Qatar on the observance of National Sport Day,” said the ambassador.

The envoy, who is celebrating the first NSD in Qatar as the embassy opened in November 2021, welcomed this initiative and commended Qatar’s leadership for the vision of creating a healthy and fit nation.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for adults, elderly and the children as well to further experience beautiful Qatar,” he said.

According to Ambassador Shadood, a healthy body will result in greater productivity which will see the beautiful state of Qatar being propelled to greater heights.

The ambassador is a fitness enthusiast and is a firm believer that fitness is tied with increased productivity and overall physical and mental wellbeing.

“We encourage our community to be fit and healthy even after sports day. In fact, President of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali is himself an avid sport enthusiast and is an excellent cricketer good enough to play with international stars such as Ramnaresh Sarwan and Lennox Cush,” he said.

On a personal level, Ambassador Shadood maintains a strict fitness regimen which he believes that the discipline is from within and it is not something to be imposed on anyone.

He, however, said that the embassy is considering engaging the Guyanese community to commence some kind of fitness activity on a monthly basis.
