Man who stole phone at masjid jailed for nine months

Joshua Viera, 20, was on Friday sentenced to nine months imprisonment by City Magistrate Leon Daly after he confessed to stealing a man’s cellphone while at the Alexander Village Masjid.

Viera, of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown admitted that on July 20, 2021, at Alexander Village, he stole a Samsung S20 cellphone valued at $75,000 and $12,000 cash property of Haroon Hussain.

Magistrate Daly sentenced Viera to nine months imprisonment.

According to reports, both parties are known to each other since they attended the same masjid.

On the day in question, the victim left his cell phone and money with his niece in the kitchen area of the Masjid so he could go and pray.

However, Viera came into the kitchen area and stole the cellphone and money.

The matter was reported to the police and an investigation was launched. Viera was recently arrested. The court heard that during 2021, Viera was charged and convicted for a similar crime.
