A seven-year-old boy is in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital nursing injuries to his head along with a fractured shoulder after he was struck down by a hire car on Sunday at Lovely Lass Public Road, West Coast Berbice.

Injured is Jayden Cheeffoon; police said that the accident occurred at around 11:15hrs.

According to the police report, Joseph Warde, the 50-year-old driver of HC 9812, claimed that he was proceeding west along the southern side of the road at about 75 kmph when the boy suddenly ran north across the road from behind a parked car and into his path.

The driver claimed that he applied brakes but the front portion of his car collided with the child.

The boy was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Fort Wellington Public Hospital; he was referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he underwent further treatment and then transferred to the GPHC where he is now a patient in the Intensive Care Unit.

A breathalyzer test conducted on the driver found no alcohol in his breath, however, a notice of intended prosecution has been served and he remains in custody assisting with further investigations.
