With the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) giving the nod of approval for Brazilian firm Construtora Queiroz Galvao S.A. to build the US$190 million Linden to Mabura Hill Road, Public Works Minister Juan Edghill believes that a contract can be signed by the end of February.

Responding to questions from the News Room, Minister Edghill said that the government is looking to start works “as soon as possible” considering the magnitude of the project and the ensuing benefits it will have.

Minister Edghill explained that as per the terms and conditions of the CDB, there is a 10-day “wait period to ensure none of the contractors protest or have an issue with the award”.

That period has elapsed and the government is now quickly moving to sign the contract.

Approximately 121 km of gravel road extending from Linden to Mabura Hill will be upgraded to an asphaltic concrete road.

And according to Edghill, the upgrades to the road link to Region Nine, which borders Brazil, are a major boost for hemispheric connectivity.

It would provide major support to ease of travel, trade, and general connectivity between Guyana and Brazil and open vast opportunities by linking Guyana’s hinterland communities to Georgetown.

This is the CBD’s largest funded project to date and the process followed a stringent and transparent procurement process.

Calls for proposals for the prequalification of contractors were made in February 2021 and 10 contractors were prequalified with the list being approved by the CDB in October 2021.

The bids were scrutinized and evaluated by a team of local engineers. After a thorough evaluation process involving engagements and consultations with the CDB, Consultant Mott MacDonald and other specialists, the Brazilian firm was determined as the most responsive bidder indicating full compliance with all environmental, social, health, and safety requirements.

Construtora Queiroz Galvao S.A is a large Brazilian Contractor established in 1966. The Company specializes in the construction of refineries, roads, bridges, commercial offices, residential buildings, highways, and sewage systems worldwide.
