Man, 64, dies in Better Hope accident
A 64-year-old man died hours after he was struck down by a taxi (HB 7962) along the Better Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road.
Dead is Sahadeo Balgobin, also of Better Hope.
The accident occurred at about 18:15 hrs on Monday and Balgobin succumbed to his injuries at about 09:30hrs on Tuesday, Police Headquarters reported.
The taxi, which was being driven by Balram Sitaram, 61, of Lusignan, ECD, was proceeding east along the road when it is alleged that Balgobin ran into his path.
Police said Balgobin fell on top of the car’s bonnet and windscreen, then onto the road.
The taxi driver, with the assistance of public-spirited persons, rushed Balgobin to the Georgetown Public Hospital in an unconscious condition.
Police said he suffered a broken left leg and head injuries.
The taxi driver is presently in custody, and a breathalyzer test conducted found no trace of alcohol.
A notice of intended prosecution has been served, police said.
