Police sources have confirmed the driver killed in an accident along the Schoonord Public Road, West Bank Demerara, is 49-year-old Joseph Charles of Durban Street, Lodge, Georgetown.

The News Room was reliably informed that Charles did not have a driver’s license and that he was speeding at the time of the accident which occurred at about 08:30hrs on Wednesday.

The accident involved a truck (GWW 4927) driven by 41-year-old Ivan Mitchell, motorcar PZZ 513, driven by Steve Gulani, 44, and the car (PVV 4804) driven by Charles.

An occupant in Charles’ car was identified as Alex Saul, 23, of Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara.

The News Room understands that the truck was proceeding north along the the Schoonord Public Road while Charles was proceeding south at a fast rate. It is alleged that Charles lost control and collided with the right side front of the truck; he then collided with the other car.

Charles and Saul were both trapped inside the vehicle and had to be removed by firefighters.

They were rushed in an unconscious state to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where Charles was pronounced dead.

Saul was admitted a patient suffering from a fractured left hip and leg; his condition is regarded as stable.
