An accident on the Agricola, East Bank Demerara road on Monday night claimed the life of 24-year-old Nionel Berkley and has left a female in a critical condition.

Preliminary information reaching the News Room revealed that Berkley, of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was driving his motorcycle at a fast rate heading in the direction of Georgetown when he collided with the pedestrian.

The Guyana Police Force, in a subsequent report, noted that the accident occurred at about 19:00hrs.

Police said the young man was riding CK 5462 north along the center of the western carriageway without a safety helmet.

It is alleged that he collided with the female (name and address presently unknown) who was crossing from east to west on a pedestrian crossing.

As a result of the collision, they both fell onto the road. The motorcyclist was picked up in an unconscious condition and transported by ambulance to the Georgetown Public Hospital
    where he was pronounced dead.

The pedestrian was also picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and taken to the same hospital where she is presently in the critical bay receiving medical attention.

According to the police, it is not known at this time if the motorcyclist was the holder of a provisional or driver’s licence. Efforts to identify the female pedestrian are being made as further investigations are ongoing.
