Semi-final exit for Team Guyana at Caribbean Table Tennis Championship

Team Guyana had to settle for bronze after both the male and female teams were knocked out at the semi-final stage of the ongoing Senior Caribbean Table Tennis Championship in Cuba.

However, both teams reasserted themselves as the best English-speaking Caribbean units at the event.

Guyana men went down to Puerto Rico 3-1 despite a valiant effort from Shemar Britton, who won the second match 3-0 (11-6, 14-12, 11-5) against Richard Pietri, and went 1-3 (6-11, 11-8, 10-12, 9-11) in the fourth match.

Christopher Franklin had lost the first match 0-3 (7-11, 14-16, 10-12) to Oscar Birriel, while Jonathan Van Lange, who has impressed this tournament, went down to Daniel Gonzalez 7-11, 6-11, 8-11.

Similarly, the women went down 1-3 to Cuba in the semi-final.

Olympian Chelsea Edghill led the way with an opening 11-8, 8-11, 11-4, 11-7 victory against Idalys Lovet, but the hosts came back to sweep the next three matches.

Natalie Cummings lost 6-11, 3-11, 4-11; Priscilla Greaves 4-11, 2-11, 2-11 to Karla Perez-Gonzalez and Edghill 6-11, 5-11, 7-11 against highly-rated Daniela Fonseca Carrazana.

Attention now turns to the Singles competition, which starts Saturday.
