Ramdhani siblings medal at ACAC Badminton Championship

The Ramdhani siblings- Narayan and Priyanna- continue to impress in Canada, placing on the podium at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Badminton Championship (Provincials), which was played last weekend at the Olds College Auditorium.

Day One saw the players competing in the team tournament, while the individual championship was held on Day Two.

Narayan lived up to his Athlete-of-the-Year status by winning gold for the King’s University in the Men’s Singles.

In Round One he defeated Sivansh Shivansh 21-12, 21-18, before toppling David Jay 21-12, 21-16 in quarter-final action.

The older Ramdhani sibling then defeated Smit Patel 21-18, 9-21, 21-17 in a highly competitive final to claim the Men’s Single ACAC title for the second time in his college career.

Priyanna meanwhile, won bronze for Olds College in Women Singles. She played against Makayla Basque and won 21-7, 21-9 in Round One, and then defeated Abbey Taylor 21-8, 21-9 at the quarter-finals.

She then lost to Jasleen Kaur 21-16, 21-13 in semi-final action and subsequently gained a walkover from Cecilia Wolski to win third place.

Priyanna carried her team Olds College (who place fourth in the Team tournament) to win five medals at the Championship.

She teamed up with Abbey Taylor to win silver in the Women Doubles, while placing third in the Mixed Doubles games, partnering Tye Belanger.

Apart from the on-court action last weekend, a memorial table was put on display and a moment of silence was observed for their father Gokarn Ramdhani as the Provincial Tournament was held at Olds College where he coached as a Head/Technical Coach from 2019-2021.

Meanwhile, the Ramdhani siblings are scheduled to represent Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) at Nationals (CCAA) on March 17-19.

In late April, the siblings will be competing in the Pan Am Individual Championship in El Salvador, in the Singles and Mixed Doubles categories.

On the local scene, the Guyana Badminton Association will host the annual Gumdac Singles Easter tournament on April 1-2 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
