17 persons rescued from sinking boat; captain’s license suspended

Some fifteen passengers, the captain and a bowman, were rescued from a sinking boat following a collision with a fishing vessel on Tuesday in the Essequibo River.

The News Room understands that the passenger boat, which had school children, negotiated a turn and collided with the fishing vessel on its way from Parika, East Bank Essequibo to Supenaam in Region Two.

The boat immediately began to take in water and passengers were submerged; fortunately, they were wearing safety jackets at the time. The passengers, captain and bowman, were rescued by another passing boat and taken to Parika.

As the Maritime Administration (MARAD) investigates the incident, the captain’s license has been suspended until further notice.
