Deadly West Side crash: Teen driver remanded to prison

The teen driver involved in the horrific De Willem, West Coast Demerara accident on Monday last has been charged with three counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

Matthew David Aaron Ambedkar, 19, of Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo appeared before Magistrate Zamila Ally Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plea to the charges.

He was represented at attorney-at-law Koniyo Sandiford and will make his next court appearance on March 24, 2022.

The teen was reportedly racing along the De Willem Public Road when he ploughed into three persons at the Sharmila Harrykissoon Sports Bar at De Willem.

Carlito Gobinlall, 23, a Venezuelan national and an employee of the bar; Ayube Mohammed, 44, a fisherman known as ‘Quarter’ of Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD and another fisherman, Kiram Rampersaud, 41, called ‘Rocky’ of Zeeburg, were all killed on the spot. The accident occurred just before 22:00hrs.

Gobinlall was thrown several feet away and landed in front of a pharmacy; Mohamed was found under the debris and Rampersaud was found inside a drain. The owners of the bar suffered millions of dollars  in damage.

Ambedkar was also injured in the horrific accident along with two other patrons of the bar – Wazim Mohammed, an electrician of De Kinderen and 33-year-old Chandrika Veerasammy of De Willem.

Police Headquarters reported that no alcohol was detected in the teen’s breath after a breathalyser test was conducted.

A parked SUV (PYY 9456) belonging to 37-year-old Iaz Fizool, a long-time customer of the bar, was also damaged during the accident.
