Customs Officer arrested for shooting horse cart operators

Two horse cart operators are nursing gunshot wounds to their leg and foot after they were shot by a 40-year-old Customs Officer attached to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) while they were cutting grass in an empty lot at Kersaint Park, La Bonne Intention, East Coast Demerara on Sunday.

Police Headquarters reported that the two victims underwent surgeries at the Georgetown Public Hospital; the 30-year-old victim was shot to his right leg while the 36-year-old was shot to his right foot.

The police report noted that the incident occurred at around 16:00hrs. The suspect handed over his licensed 9MM with 12 matching rounds in the magazine.

He was told of the offence, cautioned and claimed that the men were in the empty lot next door to his home when one of them attempted to enter his yard and he discharged the firearm in the air and then in the direction of the men.

He was arrested and escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station where he was placed in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
