A two-storey-wooden house was destroyed on Friday night by a fire suspected to be the work of arsonists.

The owner of the house, Pushwattie Bridglall, 37 of Lot 10 No.71 Village, Upper Corentyne told the News Room that she rented the structure to Richard (only name given) while she lives next door.

According to Bridglall, she was awakened by her son at approximately 23:00 hrs and told that the house was on fire next door.

According to the woman, Richard was sleeping in a hammock in the bottom flat of her house because earlier in the day, he had an argument with a male friend who usually frequents the house.

During the argument, the suspect allegedly threatened to kill Richard and burn the house down. Richard, concerned for his safety, decided to stay at Bridglall’s residence.

Meanwhile, the woman said that the fire service took some 30 minutes to arrive and by the time they did, the house was already destroyed.

An estimated $300,000 was lost due to the fire. Investigations are ongoing.
