Nizam Persaud, 28, a mason of Good Hope Squatting Area, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was remanded to prison on Monday for the murder of Guyana Defence Force Corporal and medic, Chavez Mangal.

Persaud appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court. He was not required to plea to the charge, which alleged that he murdered Mangal at a wedding house on March 13.

The matter was adjourned to May 13, 2022 for statements.

Mangal, 30, was stabbed to death during his sister’s wedding at Good Hope. He was reportedly stabbed to his upper chest and arm by Persaud and three other men armed with knives and cutlasses.

The suspects also attacked and stabbed two others – a guest at the wedding and the disc jockey (DJ) – who was also robbed of his Mac Book Pro laptop valued at $130,000.

Persaud was arrested about five houses away from the scene; police said he was found with two knives and a scissors.

Relatives had told the News Room that the four suspects arrived at the wedding house and started to tease some girls who were dancing when Mangal asked them to leave, but they got upset and started to throw bottles at him.

This resulted in a physical altercation, during which Mangal was stabbed.

The police, however, released a different version of events to the press, claiming that suspects were imbibing at the wedding house when one of them approached the DJ to inquire about the music.

Mangal lived with his parents at Enterprise, ECD; he was the third of four children and was the only son of his parents.
