Miner dies in freak accident at Two Point Backdam


A gold miner who the police identified as 38-year-old Damyon Gibson is now dead after a branch from a tree fell on his head at his mining operation at Two Point Backdam, Cuyuni River on Tuesday.

Police in Regional Division #7 were called to the location after it was reported that the man, who hails from Caribese Hill, Bartica, sustained injuries at about 12:00hrs.

A police report noted that Gibson was the owner of a four inch-land dredging operation.

On Tuesday, he was standing conversing with a friend, when suddenly a branch from a nearby tree fell and struck him to his head.

Police said Gibson’s workers rushed to his assistance and took him to the Aurora Mining Company, further up the Cuyuni River, where he was pronounced dead by a doctor.

His body was later transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital where the police observed injuries to his head and right hand.

The body is presently lying at the Bartica Hospital mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination.
