Bus driver, passengers arrested as CANU seize $12.5M worth in cocaine, firearm

A bus driver and two occupants of a route 32 minibus were arrested by ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) on Wednesday at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo after a quantity of cocaine and a loaded pistol were found.

In a statement, CANU said its Officers were acting on information when they intercepted and searched the vehicle.

They found 10 parcels of suspected cocaine and one Smith & Wesson .40 caliber pistol with a magazine containing eight bullets.

The driver, 31-year-old Akeem Brumell along with two other occupants of the bus, Gary Toney, 46 and Oliton Sobers, 28 were arrested and escorted to CANU’s Headquarters with the narcotics.

The substance tested positive for cocaine and had a total weight of 11.4kgs with a street value of approximately $12.5 million
