Pandemonium broke out Sunday morning when bees swarmed the No.67 Village, Upper Corentyne, Berbice house of a woman and stung her four children.

The children, ages, 1, 2, 5 and 11, are currently hospitalised at the Skeldon Public Hospital. The mother, Sunita Charran was also stung but she was treated and sent away.

Fazika Bux, a neighbour, told the News Room that the incident occurred at approximately 07:00 hrs.

Bux said the family has been living at the house for only three weeks but noted that there is an empty lot nearby that is overgrown with bushes.

Old machinery is also stored in the empty lot.

According to Bux, the mother of the children said she was dressing to head out to church when the bees swarmed the home and attacked them.

Charran’s eight-year-old son ran out out the house and began screaming for the neighbours.

Bux said neighbours made smoking devices to ward the bees away.

She added that when persons managed to get inside, “there were millions of bees in the house” and the mother had wrapped up her baby in a cloth but the head was exposed and the bees stung the baby’s head multiple times.

Bux said it took neighbours nearly 20 minutes to remove the children from the house to seek medical attention.

“The baby start vomit and a bee came out the mouth,” Bux said.

They were subsequently discharged from the hospital but later on Sunday, the children began to feel worse and they continued to vomit.

As a result, they were rushed back to the hospital Sunday night where they remained in a stable condition.

Bux said it was a horse in the empty lot that disturbed the bees.

According to the woman, the police and the Chairman of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) were contacted and a request was made to clear the empty lot.

“The area got too much bush and too much old iron in the land, we told the police and the NDC that it needs to be looked into.”

Bux said the affected family is poor and residents in the area have been helping them.

Hampers are expected to be given to the family by the Commander of Region Six Bhudnarine Persaud and others today.

Anyone willing to help the family can contact Bux on telephone number: 338-1245.
