Nicolette Fernandes exemplified that age is truly just a number as she rolled back her years of excellence to win gold for Guyana at the ongoing Pan American Squash Championships in Guatemala.

Facing the tournament’s number-one seeded player, Laura Tovar, the 38-year-old Fernandes swept the Colombian 3-0 on Wednesday evening.

With no medals in the men’s singles or doubles categories, Guyana’s hopes for an individual medal rested with Fernandes, and she delivered via a sublime 11-9, 11-4, 11-5 performance.

Guyana will now turn its attention to the team segment in a big to qualify for the Central American and Caribbean Games. The top eight Women and top ten Males teams will gain automatic qualification.

The other members of team Guyana are Alex Arjoon, Kristian Jeffrey, Jason-Ray Khalil, Samuel Ince-Carvalhal, Ashley Khalil, Mary Fung-A-Fat and Gabrielle Fraser, Ramon Chan-A-Sue (Coach), Garfield Wiltshire (Manager) and Alwyn Callender (Referee).
