The 25-year-old woman, who was brutally assaulted by her father- a popular Kitty businessman, has successfully obtained a lifetime protection order from the court.
The order was granted on Monday by City Magistrate Leron Daly who ordered the businessman to keep 1,000 feet away from his daughter. The victim can have the order changed if she desires.
On April 1, the businessman appeared before Magistrate Daly for the offences of ‘Inflicting Grievous Bodily Harm and Threatening Language’. He was released on bail in the sum of $400,000 after pleading not guilty to the two charges.
At the time, the victim was granted an interim protection order which has since been amended. The case is adjourned until May 6.
The young victim, during a recent interview with reporter Leroy Smith, revealed that she has been brutalised by her father for years.
She only managed to come forward now because the latest beating was captured on CCTV cameras inside the family’s business place.
The assault occurred on March 25 and the victim reported the matter to the Kitty Police Station on March 28, 2022, but the businessman was only arrested on March 31.
His firearm was also seized hours after he appeared in court last Friday and the video became public.
The Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the alleged unprofessional handling of a matter by ranks from the Kitty police station.
At the weekend, the video of the assault has been circulating on social media, with people including the Minister of Human Services and Social Protection Dr. Vindhya Persaud condemning the businessman’s actions.
“The worst thing anyone can do is to justify abuse, violence and just plain cruelty –no one deserves that no matter what,” the minister said in a post on social media.
