President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Monday announced that a new National Stadium will be constructed in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). This new stadium, he said, is part of the government’s development plan for the region.
The News Room understands that the new stadium will be constructed at Palmyra.
“To support that national stadium, we will build an entire new urban centre,” the President said while addressing residents at the Drop-in Centre in Smithfield, New Amsterdam.
This urban centre, he explained, will feature new hostels and hospitals. And importantly, the government has already received proposals for these developments with some carded to start before the end of this year.
Additionally, to support the increased tourism activity expected here, the President also noted that the aerodrome at Rose Hall, Canje, will be upgraded to a municipal airport similar to the Ogle airport on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD).
The President is leading an outreach activity with residents of Region Six. Joined by Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Oneidge Walrond and Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues, the President is expected to hear many concerns and suggestions from the residents.
