Foulis woman, 57, stabbed to death by husband a day before court case

A 57-year-old woman of 15th Street Foulis, East Coast Demerara, was horrifically murdered in her sleep in the wee hours of Tuesday. Dead is Savitri Raj, a mother of three.

Relatives told the News Room that Savitri was reportedly stabbed multiple times by her husband, a fisherman identified as Vijay Raj, at about 01:00hrs.

The husband escaped after committing the heinous act and has gone into hiding. The couple had been married for 32 years.

The husband broke a window in the house and escaped after the couple’s son heard her groaning in her sleep and thought that she was sick.

But upon checking on his mother, he discovered her lying in blood with a stab wound to the neck.

“He stab her in her sleep and cork she mouth,” the dead woman’s sister Chandra Heeralall told the News Room.

The sister revealed that three weeks ago, Vijay attacked Savitri with a Guinness bottle and injured her head. The woman made a report at the Enmore Police Station and the matter was taken to the court.

Chandra explained that the couple was scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

“Yesterday was my birthday and me come and ask them ‘what is y’all story and he [husband] said that he ah give she all he money and he nah get relationship with she,” a tearful Chandra explained.

The man had reportedly told relatives that he will kill Savitri and then kill himself.

“He never tell me he go kill he self and kill she, but he tell other people and me tell them y’all live happy and peacefully and loving, life short.”
