Trio remanded to prison for armed robbery

Three men appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on Thursday charged jointly with the armed robbery of a 50-year-old man which occurred on April 6, 2022, at Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

The three accused are Adrian Fernandes, a 30-year-old labourer of South Vryheid’s Lust, ECD who was arrested on April 11; Gladwin McDonald, a 30-year-old labourer of Goedverwagting Squatting Area who was arrested on April 10; and Emanuel Payne, a 23-year-old of Lot 128 Goedverwgating Housing Scheme who was arrested on April 11.

They appeared before Magistrate Alisha George and pleaded not guilty; they were remanded to prison until May 16, 2022. Police identified the victim as Alex Adridge of Goedverwagting Squatting Area.

In a subsequent report, the police revealed that the incident occurred at around 03:20hrs; the men reportedly stole four gold rings valued at $150,000; one silver chain valued at $80,000 and $5,000 in cash.

“The perpetrators were four unidentifiable males wearing face masks, one of whom was armed with a handgun,” the police report noted.
It is alleged that the victim was awoken by a noise in his house; he went to his living room where he was allegedly confronted by the suspects and a scuffle ensued during which he was shot in his upper right leg by the armed suspect.
The men then escaped and the victim was taken to the hospital. Police obtained CCTV footage and the suspects were later arrested.
